Play Like A Girl is a jam session and network for women musicians, providing an opportunity to gain inspiration and support from each other, and a safe space to jam together and expand creativity, skills and networks. An experienced local performer hosts each session and performs a set. Afterwards, women musicians have an opportunity to perform their own songs and jam with others.

Play Like A Girl Jam Sessions are the last Tuesday of every month from February through November.

Melbourne's only jam session for women musicians, Play Like A Girl, is in a new venue for 2010 - the Cornish Arms Hotel in Brunswick. Special guest for Tuesday 31st August is Rebecca Barnard.

"I decided to record this album in New York with one of my oldest friends Barney McAll - I felt I needed to be displaced and unfettered, but to work with someone I was really comfortable with."

Recorded at Tony Bennett's famed studios in New Jersey, New York, Barnard's trademark soulful pop embraces the jazz heritage she inherited from her renowned father, Len, and references the jazz greats she grew up with on the stereo; Pinetop Smith, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller and opera legend Gladys Moncrieff, our Glad.

With a warm nod to her past with Rebecca's Empire and solo work with O'Mara, Barnard's creative voice has reached a new level of maturity, confidence and the independent spirit of a woman coming into her own. 'Everlasting' has one eye over its shoulder and the other fixed firmly on the road ahead.

Much loved in her hometown of Melbourne, Rebecca Barnard has penned a collection of songs reminiscent of the unbridled honesty of Martha Wainwright, Iron & Wine and Josh Rouse.
