How to select drumsticks

Whether you're a beginner or have been playing drums for a while, choosing the right pair of sticks is very important. There are so many different types of drumsticks out there that it can be a confusing subject for even the most experienced drummer.

The most popular model drumsticks are the 7A, 5A, 5B and 2B. Within these models you will then have the option of a wood or nylon tip.

What do drumstick model numbers mean? The origins of drumstick model numbers come from the early days of drumstick manufacturing. The number indicates the circumference (thickness) of the drumstick with larger numbers referring to thinner drumsticks: 7A is thinner than 5A which is in turn thinner than a 2B. The letters stand for the original intention of the drumstick: B stands for Band, and A stands for Orchestral. A band model stick will have a slightly thicker circumference than an Orchestral model. So a 5B will be thicker than a 5A.

What does this mean for you? Well a drumstick has to feel comfortable in the drummer's hand. A thin stick like the 7A will work well for a child with smaller hands. It is also the stick of choice for many jazz drummers who use it to play lighter and faster due to its smaller size. The 5A (the most popular model) will work for most styles of music and feels very comfortable in an average size hand. A drummer that wants more volume and a heavier weight will tend to lean toward the 5B or 2B drumstick; these sticks will also provide higher durability.

For a great quality drumstick that is reasonably priced check out the Billy Hyde series that is available in all of the above sizes: 7A, 5A, 5B, 2B. For the best quality drumsticks look for Vic Firth and Zildjian brands.

Most drumsticks will be available in a wood or nylon tip. Wood provides a warm natural sound while nylon has a bright high-frequency sound. The sound difference will be most noticeable on your cymbals. Nylon-tip drumsticks will also have greater durability than wood-tip sticks.
